Reusable Produce Bags

Yesterday’s quick trip to pick up my CSA vegetable share (courtesy of Garden of Eve Farm) reminded me of the necessity of bringing reusable produce bags to the grocery store and farmers’ market.  At the pick up point, the tables were scattered with bok choi, greens, garlic scapes, and pea pods.  I gathered my produce into old plastic bags I’d been saving and put those bags into my canvas grocery bag.

When I shop at the market or grocery store, I’m thrilled and encouraged when I watch shoppers put their purchases into their canvas/cloth bags and baskets. I try to stash reusable bags everywhere so I’m always prepared for a spur of the moment purchase.  It’s now time to take my efforts one step further.  Even if I bring a reusable tote bag to the market or grocery store, I usually must put my purchases into one of the smaller plastic bags, both for weighing purposes and so all of my produce doesn’t mingle and smash at the bottom of the bag. While I may come home with two to three fewer grocery bags, I still bring home a collection of smaller, often un-reusable, plastic bags.

Let’s make that final push to eliminate unnecessary plastic bags! Here are several options for reusable produce bags.  These small bags can be stashed inside the larger grocery bag you’re already planning on bringing.
